Idlewood

We gathered in Idlewood to fine dinner of trout with creamy dill sauce, new potatoes and a fine wine.  We regaled Obscura and Samus with our adventure in the woods in search of the beast of displacement.  I let the team know my research let me know this beast was like a panther but with tentacles and could disappear and reappear again.  I also let them know the beast seems to fear fire.

Obscura said she spoke to her friend and mentor, Merra who said she and her adventuring party had met this beast in the Grand Woods West of the city and Merra was the only one to survive. Her team had also found the remains of a dimension hound and brought it’s bones to the catacombs beneath the city.  Merra warned Obscura to leave the beast alone as we too will meet our end.  Merra is going to draw a map and give it to Obscura.

Obscura also found out after getting her elderly cousins quite drunk, that there is a ghost in the sewers beneath her cousins’ mansion.  They said their great great grandfather, Gryph Kip, was a wereboar who killed his wife, Lady Constance,  by accident and drowned himself in a cesspool in the sewers beneath his house.  Raelin asked a lot of questions…more on what the cousins own, than the noble ghost. Obscura is very reluctant to allow Raelin anywhere near her cousins’ home.

I asked Obscura about the wine we discovered under the Dead Gull and she said it looks like good labels and we should keep it as gifts for nobles when we need it.

We also looked at the piece of rolled paper Samus found in the Dead Gull, but it was so smeared with moisture we could not make anything out.

We discussed our next ingredient – the tongue of an unworldly fiend – Snargras’ imp.  Friz received information from a client, John – a carpenter who worked on Snargras’ house.  John says he has three big dogs that are very mean and also that he had put in a secret door at the back of Snargras’ house.  We talked about how we  may be able to put the dogs to sleep or poisoning them with tainted meat. Friz could brew up poisons and he has heard of sleeping potions that could put someone to sleep up to a year.  We did decide that stealth is everything, in and out and nothing leads back to us.

We went out to talk with Sam Creed who was hopefully able to find me a pearl.  He unfortunately did not find one, but Samus did get a fine set of bracers.

On our arrival back we found a tall gangly man waiting for us in the house – Jack from the society here to initiate us all into ARTS.  My team were all very willing to take the oath and we all received tattoos that gave us a boost where we needed it most and also would help if we were on death’s door.

We decided to meet at 10AM back at Idlewood to head to the White Knuckle  and our trip to find the Edmund Fitzgerald. I made a nice breakfast of fruit, eggs and toasted bread with fresh butter to fortify us prior to leaving.  We paid our gold at the gate and head to the White Knuckle where Rudy awaited us.

After the three sailed ship launches and we are underway, Rudy motions us to follow him into the captain’s quarter.  I am not feeling very well and the strawberries I brought Rudy are making my breakfast churn.  I hand them over quickly and sit down.  Rudy says just above a hush whisper that he has heard that when the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk, she was full of gold and there was said to hold the Rod of Kith Morgan – a powerful evil wizard that was famous for his electric spells.  Rudy and his chosen men are willing to come with us and it would be a 50/50 split.  We agreed and I had to run out to the deck and be sick off the side of the boat.  I don’t think I would ever be a sailor.

As Shark Tooth Island came into view we took the large keel boat with six of Rudy’s men manning the oars.  Samus with his keen sight was able to make out the shipwreck covered in seaweed and slammed near the island – it had moved sine Rudy was here last.  As we maneuver toward the island a huge rock splashes down near the boat.  As we get closer, we can see a huge man – a giant of a man – standing atop the cliff hurdling boulders at our boat like they were pebbles. His next rock hits the back of the boat.  We list but are still upright and the sailors double their effort in getting us to the wreck and the safety beneath the cliffs.  Another rock hits the front of the boat splintering it, but still the boat holds and we easy into what we discover there is a cave and we steer the boat into it to avoid the rock pelting giant.

It is a strange cave and I send my dancing lights out and torches are lit. Inside on a bed of sand is the Edmund Fitzgerald.  And in the center of the sand…a pile of gold and treasure.  The torchlight gleams off the gold the cave entrance snaps shut.  A trap!  Set by the giants?  Well we are here for the sand…and the treasure.  We disembark and Friz cries out as a black ooze starts to burn his flesh.  We look up and hanging from the ceiling of the cave is this black tar like creature.  Friz hides and I try to get away but the creature hits me and acid burns my flesh.  Weapons and arrows seem to melt from its acid so we pelt it with fire, eldritch blasts, and fists until it no longer rises.

Friz and Obscura look at the cave entrance and discover it is not a rock that is blocking us…we have been swallowed by a creature.  Rudy and his men collect the treasure and I find a pearl among it.  I also find the Rod of Kith Morgan and tell everyone that I will need a bit to discover it’s powers but it may help us get out of here.  While I spend time with the rod  the others gather the remains of the ship and create a bonfire.

I tell everyone that the rod can create lightning.  If I use it to directly hit the creature at the mouth and we light the bonfire we may have a chance to get out.  The plan works and a giant worm pulls out of its cave trying to recapture us, but Rudy’s sailors have found their inner strength and are spurred on by fea and we are able to escape.

We split the gold and I keep the rod.  The others get 65 gp.

We are able to make it safely back to Idlewood.
